Patrick Nyembo
About
Born in Lubumbashi, Patrick Nyembo, widely known by his artistic name ‘Patra,’ has been a luminary in the artistic domain since his early years. His primary education at Collège Imara laid the foundation for his passion, which was further nurtured at the Institut de Beaux-Arts Lubumbashi. Here, he honed his skills in the visual arts, specializing in painting.
In 2019, Patra showcased his remarkable prowess by participating in a drawing competition at Wallonie Bruxelles in Lubumbashi, securing a commendable 4th place. Fast forward to 2022, and Patra’s talents were shining brightly at the National Museum of Congo during the Mwasi Kesi festival. It was here that he sold an art piece aptly named ‘Ulomba,’ which echoes his flair for translating everyday life’s realities into evocative art.
When asked about his artistic journey, Patra describes it as a deep-rooted sensitivity that had always been part of him. From a young age, he found solace and expression in drawing. It wasn’t an easy path to tread, facing numerous discouragements. Yet, the unwavering support of his parents became the wind beneath his wings, pushing him to embrace his calling.
Patra’s unique painting technique, which he fondly terms ‘Magezi Magezi’ (spots or blotches), stands out in its distinctiveness. It’s all about creating character forms using blotches of colors, an innovative technique that brings his creations to life. The intricate interplay of these color spots serves as both the structure and soul of his characters.
Among the artists who have influenced Patra, Ann Gale stands out prominently, leaving an indelible mark on his artistry. Currently residing in Kinshasa, Patra’s impact on the contemporary art scene remains undeniable. His pieces are not just paintings; they are reflections of daily life, narratives of ordinary moments that speak of profound truths.
A beacon of dedication, talent, and innovation, Patra continues to shape the Congolese art realm with every stroke of his brush. With a legacy anchored in authenticity and a future bright with promise, Patra is undeniably a name to remember in the annals of Congolese art.
