Born in Kolwezi, Lualaba on August 14, 1995, Phinet Kisimba is a testament to the transformative power of art. From his early days, inspired by his father’s craft of designing postcards, to his academic pursuits in the realm of fine arts, Kisimba’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational.

Phinet’s artistry is deeply rooted in his observations of the human form, its transient nature, and the eternal essence of human thoughts. His works from 2018 beautifully juxtapose the human body with smoke, symbolizing the fleeting nature of our physical existence but the permanence of our thoughts and beliefs. By 2021, his focus shifted to a pressing concern – the concept of time and its significance in the African and Congolese context. Through his art, he emphasizes the importance of valuing time, suggesting that Africa’s path to prosperity is closely tied to its understanding and utilization of time.

Kisimba’s unique technique sets him apart. Preferring the texture and depth that painting knives offer over traditional brushes, he creates masterpieces in oil on canvas. His initial sketches come to life with the application of paint, often incorporating everyday tools like forks and spoons to achieve distinct effects. This innovative approach, combined with his deep philosophical insights, makes his work resonate with audiences.

In his own words, Kisimba recalls his early days when school instructors recognized his talent, often calling upon him to illustrate lessons on chalkboards. This early recognition, coupled with his father’s encouragement, set him on a path to the Academy of Fine Arts in Lubumbashi and later Kinshasa. Here, he honed his style, drawing inspiration from impressionism and artists like Lucian Freud. But it was his transition from replication to imagination that truly defined his artistic voice.
