Atelier Malu
About
Nestled behind the bustling Liberty Market in Ndjili, Kinshasa, you’ll find “Malu” – a modest atelier where the air hums with the resonance of handcrafted guitars. This is the sanctuary of Mangwala Misoko Mbuta, a master artisan who’s turned his lifelong passion into a symbol of Congo’s vibrant cultural legacy.
As a young boy, Mangwala’s fingers danced over makeshift instruments, crafting melodies from his imagination. His love for music was rivaled only by his innate talent for building, leading him to create his own guitar at a tender age. But life had different plans. He ventured into the realm of education, dedicating over 13 years as a teacher. Yet, amidst the challenges both financially and personally, Mangwala felt a void – a yearning for the symphony of wood and strings.
Listening to Mangwala, one can’t help but be captivated. When asked why he chose this craft over, say, general carpentry, his eyes lit up, his voice filled with fervor. Witnessing him shape the neck of a guitar, using just a machete as his primary tool, it’s evident – his artistry isn’t just learned; it’s innate. Born into a lineage of artisans and musicians, Mangwala’s destiny was sealed. His own journey as a guitarist further attests to this, having built his own instrument as a child.
Innovation is another chord in Mangwala’s symphony. He crafts his guitar strings with a machine of his own invention. Watching him create the “La” string is a sight to behold. Once, apprentices thronged his workshop, eager to absorb his wisdom. Now, only one remains – his son, carrying forward the legacy.
Mangwala’s workshop is unassuming. A few unsold guitars, stacks of wood, and three essential tools. Financial constraints sometimes limit his resources, but not his spirit. His guitars stand out, not just as instruments but as stories. Each guitar, with its unique quirks, is a testament to handcrafted artistry, an embodiment of charm.
At Kitokongo, we cherish the art and dedication of Maître Mangwala. We invite our community to join in supporting his craft – whether by acquiring a guitar, gifting tools, or simply sharing his story. In Mangwala’s guitars, we find the heart of Congo – unique, resilient, and enchanting.
